(1)		Vice-Premier of State Council of PRC Arrives
 
		At the invitation of the member of the State Law and Order Restoration
Council and Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, goodwill
delegation led by Vice-Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic
of China Mr Wu Bangguo arrived Yangon by air on 26 October morning on an
official visit to the Union of Myanmar. Vice-Premier Mr Wu Bangguo was
accompanied by Minister for Transport Mr Huang Zhendong, Vice-Minister for
the State Planning Commission Mr Ye Qing, Vice-Minister for the State
Economic and Trade Commission Mr Zhang Wule, Deputy Secretary-General of the
State Council Mr Shi Xiushi, Vice-Minister for the State Commission for
Restructuring Economic System Mr Hong Hu, Vice-Governor of Yunnan Province Mr
Liu Jing, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Yang Wenchang, Assistant
Minister for Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Mr Sun Guangxiang,
Vice-Governor of the Bank of China Mr Gao Dezhu and other senior officials.
 
(2)		Deputy Premier Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin Receives Vice-Premier of
PRC Mr Wu Bangguo
 
		Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Vice-Premier
of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Wu Bangguo at
International Business Centre at 3 pm on 27 October. Later, the two deputy
premiers discussed matters of mutual interest and economic cooperation at
IBC.
 
		Minister Brig-Gen Abel and Assistant Minister for Foreign Trade and
Economic Cooperation Mr Sun Guangxiang signed the Framework Agreement between
the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the People's
Republic of China on a Preferential Loan with interest subsidized by the
Chinese Government to be provided by China for Myanmar. Vice-Admiral Maung
Maung Khin hosted a dinner in honour of Vice-Premier Wu and goodwill
delegation at Zeya Thiri Beikman at 7 pm on 26 October.
 
(3)		Technology Myanmar '97 Exhibition Commences
 
		Technology Myanmar '97 Exhibition, co-sponsored by Myanma Industrial
Development Committee (MIDC) and Munich International Trade Fairs Pte Ltd
(MMI) of Germany, was opened at the Convention Centre (Tatmadaw Hall) on U
Wisara Road on 27 October. Chairman of MIDC Minister for Agriculture and
Irrigation Lt-Gen Myint Aung in his address said that nowadays strenuous
efforts are being exerted for political, economic and social development. In
this regard, emphasis has been laid on the progress of the agriculture
sector, the main economic undertaking, and at the same time, endeavours are
being made for the advancement of the industrial sector with agro-based
industries, he remarked. The Government instituted Myanma Industrial
Development Committee consisting of ten ministers with view to raising
momentum of development of the industrial sector, he stated.
 
		The Committee laid down the objectives---to advance agro-based industries;
to qualitatively and quantitatively improve industrial products; to increase
production of new machinery and equipment; to manufacture industrial
machinery; to create favourable conditions for the transformation of the
nation into an industrialized one. The public will have knowledge of
technological advances from the exhibition and come to use technology
increasingly, and entrepreneurs at home and abroad will have opportunities
for establishing contacts, forging friendship, exchanging technical know-how
and cooperation. 
 
		He expressed his belief that arrangements have been made to hold a
technology seminar to exchange technical know-how in conjunction with the
exhibition, and as a result, technology advancement will be accomplished all
the more. Displayed at the exhibition are technologies on agriculture,
energy, telecommunications, construction, mining, energy, forest and light
industries. Managing Director Reinhold Unterburger extended greetings. A
total of 29 companies are participating in the exhibition, which will be open
from 9 am to 5 pm from 27 to 30 October. The technology conference will be
held at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Phaya Road, Yangon on 28 and 29 October.
 
(4)		Myanmar Officials meet Chinese Entrepreneurs
		Myanmar officials and Chinese economic entrepreneurs held a discussion on
Myanma economy, investment and trade at the Ministry of National Planning and
Economic Development on 27 October. Director-General of Directorate of
Investments and Companies Administration, Director-General of Foreign
Economic Relations Department, Trade Department and President of Myanmar
Chamber of Commerce and Industries briefed them on progress of Myanma
economy, investment opportunities in Myanmar, Myanma trade administration and
economic affairs, development of private sector respectively. Myanmar
officials replied to the questions raised by the Chinese entrepreneurs.
 
OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 27 OCTOBER
 
(A)		Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received General Manager of
Hanhwa Corporation Mr Won Sik Lee at his office at 10.30 am.
 
(B)		Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Vice-President of
Pangang Group International Economic and Trading Corporation Mr Zhang Xusheng
and party at his office at 2 pm.
 
(C)		Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Indonesian Consortium
Group led by President Director of Energi Nusantara Group Mr Farid
Prawiranegara at his office at 3 pm.
