(1)		Economic Progress of Myanmar Explained
		Economic progress of Myanmar was explained at a meeting organized by the
Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and the ASEAN Business
Forum led by ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Ajit Singh at Sedona Hotel on 11
November. Executive Director of ASEAN Business Forum Mr Khoo Hock Aun
extended greetings. Minister for NPED Brig-Gen Abel spoke of economic
progress and opportunities in Myanmar. Next, Secretary-General Dato Ajit
Singh spoke. In the evening, Brig-Gen Abel hosted dinner in honour of the
ASEAN Secretary-General and members of the mission at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal
Hotel. The meeting will continue tomorrow. The Secretary-General of ASEAN and
members of the Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry will discuss
role of the private sector in ASEAN economic cooperation.
 
(2)		98 Thai Prisoners Go Home
		A ceremony to hand over of 98 Thai prisoners to Thai authorities was held
in Insein Central Jail on 11 November. The Thai prisoners were being sent
home after suspending their jail terms due to friendly relations between
Myanmar and Thailand and Defence Services of both countries.
 
(3)		1997 Annual Programme Review Meeting of Myanmar-UNICEF Country Programme
of Co operation 1996-2000
		The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and its Myanmar partner
agencies are holding the 1997 Annual Programme Review meeting of the
Myanmar-UNICEF Country Programme of Cooperation 1996-2000 at the Department
of Medical Research on 11 and 12 November. The Myanmar-UNICEF Country
Programme of Cooperation for the Period 1996-2000 consists of six programmes
and 17 projects with the total budget of US $ 32.5 million from UNICEF
General Resources and an additional US $ 23.5 million to be raised in
Supplementary Funds for the five-year programme cycle. 
 
(4)		CSO Dy D-G Leaves for Thailand
		U Aung Myint Thein, Deputy Director-General of Central Statistical
Organization, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development left
Yangon for Thailand on 11 November to attend the working group meeting of
statistical experts sponsored by the ESCAP. The meeting will be held from 11
November to 14 November.
 
 
(5)		38 Fishermen Rescued by Total Myanmar Ships
		Thirty-eight fishermen were rescued by ships of companies working with
Total Myanmar Exploration and Production (TMEP) in Myanmar waters following a
storm in the Bay of Bangal early on 11 November.
 
(6)		Heroin Refinery and Paraphernalia Seized in Shan State
		A combined team of Defence Services columns led by No 2 Tactical Operations
Commander of North-East Command, the local Defence Services Intelligence unit
and Lashio Anti-Drug Squad found a suspicious-looking man with an M-22 rifle
at Namkhaik on 1 November. They seized the rifle, a mule and 51 packets of
heroin weighing 150 kilos from the suspect. The team combed the Namkhaik area
on 2 November, found a heroin refinery in a ravine and seized paraphernalia
used in refining heroin. The refinery included four big huts, one small hut,
75 gallons of spirit and nine bags of lime, five bags of sodium carbonate. On
3 November, the combined team combed the area and found precursor chemicals
and one air compressor in a bush. The chemicals were 10 gallons of acetic
anhydride, four gallons of spirit and some sodium carbonate. On 4 November,
the team also found 211 five-gallon containers with unidentified liquid, five
bags of lime, six bags of sodium carbonate, four bags of charcoal powder, one
bag of sodium salt and some paraphernalia used in refining opium and a man
with an M-21 rifle at a place. Action will be taken against the two according
to law.

(A)		Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Director
for Asia in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of
Germany Dr Hans Dieter Scheel and party at his office.
(B)		Minister for Hotel and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received Executive
Managing Director Mr Kazunori Uemura of Zipang Group, Centre of New Myanmar
Travel of Japan at his office.
(C)		Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received Managing
Director Anant Prasertsit of APT Travel Service Co Ltd of Thailand at his
office.
(D)		Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen 
Maung Maung received Deputy General Manager Mr Vijay G Nulkar of Bajaj Auto
Ltd and Manager Mr Deepak Mehra and party of Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd at
the commission office.
(E)		Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Vice-President of China
National Machinery & Equipment Import & Export Corporation (CMEC) Mr Li
Shuzhi and party at his office.
(F)		Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Win Tin received ASEAN
Business Forum led by ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Ajit Singh at his office.
