STATEMENT REGARDING NLD(LA) AUSTRALIA

I refer to the statement headed ?Independence day ceremony in Sydney,
Australia? that was placed on the internet by U Aye Kyaw
(ekyaw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) (Chairman, NLD (LA) Australia).
At a preliminary meeting of some 12 organisations to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of Burma?s independence on the 27 December, 1997, it was
decided
that only individuals would be acknowledged at the meeting on the 4
January,
1998, and all those in attendance would not be permitted to refer to
their
organisations, attend on behalf of their organisations or issue
statements
in their names on behalf of their organisations, in the interest of
unity
between all democratic Burmese organisations on this auspicious day.
U Aye Kyaw has breached this agreement by referring to NLD (LA)
Australia in
the statement, and I believe that this is a deliberate act to convey to
the
world the impression that I have accepted him and his organisation and
all
the groups in attendance have also accepted his organisation, especially
at
a time when there are issues of legitimacy for himself and his
organisation
within the democratic Burmese community in Sydney.
My attendance at this meeting is in no way to be construed that I have
accepted U Aye Kyaw and his organisation, as this is a matter entirely
for
himself and the NLD (LA) in the liberated areas of the Burma-Thailand
border.

Dated  5 January, 1998.

U Daniel Aung
Elected representative 1990
Mong Ping constituency
Eastern Shan States, Burma
