                     NO.A -0286(I)	 17th  January   1998

(1)		Scholars, Entrepreneurs Urged to Properly Analyze, Assess Current 
		Economic Situation in Myanmar
		The Seminar on "An Analysis and Assessment of the Current Economic Situation
in Myanmar" co-sponsored by the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of
Defence and the Tun Foundation Bank commenced at the Defence Services Guest
House on Inya Road on 16 January.  The discussions focused specifically on the
economic sector,  the revenue sector and the agriculture sector.  This is the
third seminar conducted under the auspices of the Office of Strategic Studies
and the first to be undertaken jointly with a private economic institution.
The first seminar dealt with national consolidation and the second with human
resource  development.  The heading chosen for this the third seminar concerns
financial affairs.  This seminar has been held with three aims in view.  At
present the entire region is unstable.  So, the first aim of the seminar is to
keep Myanmar entrepreneurs, business people and government staff alike well
informed about the causes that led to this state of affairs.  Myanmar could
also very well suffer from the backlash of this financial crisis to a greater
or lesser extent.  Therefore the second aim of the seminar is to enable
scholars and entrepreneurs to get together to analyze and assess the present
economic situation in Myanmar.  The third aim is to clearly define and make
more effective the role of both scholars and private entrepreneurs and to
obtain their participation and cooperation in building Myanmar into a modern
and developed nation.
  
(2)		Women's Duty to Safeguard Race, Adhere to Code of Conduct While Enjoying
Full Rights
		The National Working Committee for Women's Affairs held its Work
Coordination Meeting 1/98 at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and
Resettlement on 16 January.  It was also noted at the meeting that Myanmar
women have no need to demand their rights for they can enjoy their rights on
equal term with men and that in successive eras,  Myanmar women have enjoyed
full rights and this is due to the people's belief in Theravada Buddhism,
social customs, traditions and culture, and customary rules and existing laws.

		The NWCWA adopted and is implementing Myanmar National Action Plan for the
Advancement of Women in respective sectors nationwide in order to implement
Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.  In striving for advancement of
women, it is essential to make their full rights more prominent, achieve
harmonious multi-sectoral progress, preserve and promote culture and to
safeguard the race.  A general round of discussions followed.

(3)		Administration in Nursing Service Workshop Commences
		Administration in Nursing Service Workshop co-sponsored by WHO and Myanmar
Nurses Association commenced at the training school for nurses in the compound
of Yangon General Hospital on 16 January.  Matrons, senior nurses and nursing
cadets are participating in the workshop which will continue till 18 January.

(4)		105 Tourists Arrive on Cruiseliner ms Sea Goddess
		Under the arrangement by Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services of Ministry of
Hotels and Tourism  and Myanmar Voyages, Co Ltd, cruiseliner ms Sea Goddess 11
with 105 tourists arrived at Nanthidar Jetty of Yangon on 16 January.  The
tourists went sightseeing in Yangon and visited the Shwedagon Pagoda.  They
were entertained to variety dances on broad the cruiseliner by Myanma Hotels
and  Tourism Service at night.

(A)		Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin
received Director of Sumitomo Corporation of Japan Mr Tadahiko Mizukami and
party at his office.
(B)		Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs received Vice-President
of Koortrade Mr Carmel Dahan of Telrad Telecommunication & Electronic
Industries Ltd of Israel at his office.  Likewise, the Minister received
Director and General Manager Mr Tadahiko Mizukami of Sumitomo Corporation
Telecommunication Project Department of Japan at his office.
(C)		Minister for Finance and Revenue received Director of Ministry of
International Trade and Industry (MITI) Mr Masahiro Fujita and party at his
office. The Minister also received Chairman Viset Choopiban and party of
Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTTI) at his office.
(D)		Minister for Electric Power received Chairman of the New Energy and
Industrial Technology Development (NEDO) Mr Hachio Iwasaki at his office.
(E)		Minister for Energy received the Managing Director of Mitsui & Co Ltd Mr
Shigeru Endo and party at his office.

(1)		Myanmar Integrated Port Services Pte Ltd Launches Edible Oil Wharf at
Thilawa Port 

		The soft-opening of Wharf 4 (Edible Oil Wharf ) of Yangon Thilawa Port was
held on 17 January. Myanma Port Authority of the Ministry of Transport entered
into contract with Myanmar Integrated Port Services Private Ltd of Singapore
on 10 July 1996 to build a modern wharf at the fourth quay of Thilawa port.
The organization which undertook construction of the wharf was the first one
allowed to handle edible oil shipping in Thilawa Port Development Project, and
it was the third organization to which permission was granted for undertaking
services for the project and the second organization to open the completed
wharf. At the new wharf, 15,000-ton freighters, each with a draught of 30
feet, can be moored and it can boost freight-handling  of Yangon port. Under
the 25-year land-lease contract, Myanmar Integrated Port Services Private Ltd
has undertaken construction and will continue with freight-handling of edible
oil using modern equipment and also produce edible oil in the wharf yard.

(2)		Master of Business Administration Graduates Enjoined to do More for
Nation

		A dinner was hosted in honour of graduates, who got Master of Business
Administration degree in the first batch of the Institute of Economics, at the
Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel on 17 January. It was the first ever course opened in
Myanmar with 50 trainees beginning 5 June, 1995.

(3) 		Coord Meeting on Third London-Myanmar Open Professional Golf Tournament

		A coordination meeting on the third London-Myanmar Open Professional Golf
Tournament to be jointly organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Asian
Professional Golfers Association (APGA) took place in Yangon on 17 January.

(4)		Institute of Economics Holds 31st Convocation

		Institute of Economics (Yangon) held its 31st convocation at Yangon
University Convocation Hall on 17 January. Altogether 890 graduates were
conferred on respective degrees by the Rector.

(5)		Short-trum  instructor Buddhism  Course Opens

		A short-term instructor course on Buddhism (high level) sponsored by
Ministry of Religious Affairs was opened at State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho
(Yangon) on 17 January.

		Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of
the Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received Chairman and Editor-in-
Chief of Leaders' magazine of New York Mr Henry O Dormann at Dagon Yeiktha of
the Ministry of Defence.
