Myanmar Leader Meets UN Envoy

               YANGON (Jan. 23) XINHUA -
               Chairman of the Myanmar State
               Peace and Development Council
               (SPDC) Senior-General Than Shwe
               met with envoy of the Secretary
               General of the United Nations Alvaro
               de Soto here Friday morning shortly
               before the end of the UN envoy's
               three-day visit to Myanmar. 

               During his stay in Yangon, Alvaro,
               who is Assistant Secretary General
               of the UN, also called on First
               secretary of the SPDC
               Lieutenant-General Khin Nyunt and
               had discussions with Myanmar
               Foreign Minister U Ohn Gyaw on
               matters of mutual interest. 

               Alvaro also met with Aung San Suu
               Kyi and other leaders of the National
               League for Democracy, a major
               political party in the country. 

               However, no details were disclosed
               about the meetings. The visit of
               Alvaro, who arrived here Tuesday,
               was agreed upon when Secretary
               General of the UN Kofi Annan met
               with Chairman Than Shwe in Kuala
               Lumpur in mid-December on the
               occasion of the second informal
               summit of the Association of
               Southeast Asian Nations.
