(1)		New Yamar Dam in Sagaing Division will Irrigate 12,000 Acres
		Yamar Dam capable of irrigating 12,000 acres in Pale and Yinmabin Townships,
Monywa District, Sagaing Division, was inaugurated on 24 January. The storage
capacity of the 65-foot dam built on Yamar Creek stretching 10,400 feet is
14,056 acre-feet. The dam will be irrigating 12,000 acres of crops, it will
contribute a great deal to development of the agriculture sector of the
region.
 
(2)		Zalattaw Dam Project
		The Zalattaw Dam with 2,225-foot main dam and 2,300-foot earth dam is 50
feet high. Catchment area is nine square miles. The project started in last
November and will be completed by March 1998.
 
(3)		Minister for Religious Affairs Attends 2nd Chinese Pre-New Year Ceremony
		The 2nd Chinese Pre-New Year ceremony, sponsored by Chinese-Myanmar Buddhist
Association, was held at Shankan Restaurant in Bahan Township on 24 January
attended by Minister for Religious Affairs. Chairperson of Chinese-Myanmar
Buddhist Association Daw Khin Myint spoke on the occasion.
 
(2) Liberians and (1) Ghanian Being Deported
		On 16 of December (2) Liberians, Mr. Abrandan Gray Toe and Mr. Lafayette
Dules Liles Junior came to Yangon by Thai Airways while on 24 December one
Ghanian by the name of Mr. Jafaru Salisu came to Yangon by Myanmar Airways
posing as tourists. While in Yangon they stayed at the Yuzana Garden Hotel and
the Green Hill Motel separately. 
		Acting on a tip-off a search team was dispatched and a search and
investigation was carried out on 18 of January. The investigation revealed
that these (3) persons were in Myanmar to illegally sell United States
currency called Anti-Breeze. Together with the (3) person (3200) dollar size
black notes and other Chemicals including some instruction manuals were
seized.
		It is learnt that the (3) people have been found of breaching the law and
has been deported to Bangkok by Thai Airways flight on 23 January.
