(1)		Evaluation Workshop on Community Based Prevention    of  Juvenile
	Delinquency  Held

		The Evaluation Workshop on Community Based Prevention of Juvenile
Delinquency, sponsored by Social Welfare Department of Ministry of Social
Welfare Relief and Resettlement and ESCAPE, was held at Social Welfare
Department on 29 January. Project Officers reported on implementation and
function of the project, Principal of School for the Blind on their activities
and difficulties, U Soe Myint of Ward 18 of Hlinethaya Township on the
functions and difficulties of Hlinethaya township work group  and Adviser Dr
Thein Lwin on progress and benefits of the project.  Then Deputy Director of
Social Welfare Department explained the future programme.  The project was
started in Ward 18, Hlinethaya Township, in 1996 according to the Community
Based Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency Project.

(2)		Researchers Leave for Japan

		Research Officer of Archaeology Department of the Ministry of Culture and
Assistant Curator of Cultural Institute Department left Yangon by air on 29
January for Osaka, Japan, to study ancient cultural research and museum work
in Nara University for 50 days at the invitation of the Government of Japan.

OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 29 JANUARY

		Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received Sales Director of Fritz Werner Company Mr Paul Dieter Christ and
party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence.

Destruction  of Poppy Fields in North Eastern Command Region

		From 30 of November 1997 up till 22 of January 1998 a total of 39712.167
acres of poppy fields were manually destroyed by the Military, departmental
officials and the local populace in Tang Yang, Kutkai and Mong Ko Townships of
North Eastern Command Region.
