US scandal seen as no big deal
Bangkok Post
Thais consider the sex
scandal involving the US
president trivial compared to
the rumoured conduct of
many Thai politicians,
according to an opinion poll.
The Rajabhat Institute's Suan
Dusit campus conducted the
survey with about 2,000
people in Bangkok, Chiang
Mai, Nakhon Sawan,
Ayutthaya, Nakhon
Ratchasima, Khon Kaen,
Songkhla and Chon Buri
during January 24 and
yesterday.
Most of the respondents,
80%, said they did not view
the scandal as a big deal
because Thai politicians were
involved in juicier scandals.
47% were uncertain whether
there was any truth to the
allegations, while 42% did not
believe them.
56% did not think the
allegations would affect Bill
Clinton's popularity, 34% said
there would be some impact.
49% said there would be no
dogged investigation of this
kind if the same thing
happened to a Thai politician.
36% said the Thai media
might watch such scandals
closely but only for a short
period, and they would then
be forgotten.
55% agreed that the scandal
should remind Thai politicians
of their duties.
