The military rulers utilized Buddhist religion to win the support of its
people several times and in several ways. Buddhist sacred tooth relic was
brought from China twice to Burma. High profile religious ceremonies are
organized throughout the country. Two "Sawedaw" pagodas are built in
Rangoon and Mandalay. Then there was a random utterance (Ta-baung), which
said "Sawedaw-Hnitsuu-Aywaetuu, Pyithulee-Mwe=Tutlee-Kwae" which can be
interpreted as "Two tooth temples are similar, people beggared; army
fissured". The random utterance becomes true. People are very poor and
SLORC splits.

When there was a rumor, which said, worshipping the tooth meant respecting
the army (Sitt-tat) the people kept away from coming to it. Then military
ordered the township authorities to arrange the free buses and bring the
people to the tooth site.

MI chief Khin Nyunt usually offered goods in a basket to the monks because
the astrologer said "Khin Nyunt" and basket (Swae-chinn), of Monday and
Tuesday planets are matched so that he would be safeguarded and
successful.

In Burma under SPDC the way of giving bribe is changed. You don't have to
pay in cash as before. First, if you want to be admitted to a nurse
course, you have to deposit 50,000 kyats in a bank and give the passbook
to the broker advance. If you got admitted you have to withdraw the money
and give him. If you want to be a military nurse, you have to deposit
100,000 Kyats in the same way. It will be done. But in every jobs there
have been quota for military and intelligence.

There are checkpoints of various kinds at every 50 miles on any motor
roads. Those cars belong to Khun Sa and Wa groups are free to pass those
points. Although you do not belong to those groups you can buy a bill from
them by giving 10,000 Kyats so that you don't need to pay the taxes.

The Buddhist religious examinations of monks were suspended for two years.
The teaching monasteries are closed. So monks opted for sport. There is a
motto of military government, which said, "Burma sport must influence the
world sport". So young monks and novices go to the University ground and
play football. Teravada Buddhism does not allow the monks to play like
that.

The SLORC and SPDC transformed many villages into model villages
throughout the country. Ministers visited there and the villagers have to
entertain them with good food and dances. So the villagers are saying that
their village is not "Sanpya-Kjeiywa" but it is "Sanpya-Kjeweywa". That
means model dinning village.

The propaganda publications like Myat-khinn-thit, "Aung San Suu Kyi: where
to" and other books are distributed to all departments, offices, schools,
hospitals and elsewhere. Previously they had to buy by order and nobody
read the books. Now the books are distributed nearly free of charge but
all employees are ordered to sign that he has read and understood well.
Those who are assigned to study the books are exempted from doing work
during that time.
