(1)		Myanmar Energy & Machinery Expo'98 Opens
		A ceremony to open Myanmar Energy & Machinery Expo'98, sponsored by the
Ministry of Energy, was held at Tatmadaw Convention Centre on 24 February.
Altogether 60 companies of 17 countries show sectors of oil and gas, electric
power, textile, leather, plastic, foodstuff, instruments for wood-based
industries. The exhibition is open to the public from 24 to 26 February.
(2)		Minister for Foreign Affairs to Attend Second Ministerial Meeting on
	Haze
		Chairman of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs and Minister
for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw left Yangon on 24 February by air for Kuching
to attend the Second Ministerial Meeting on Haze to be held on 25 February in
Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The meeting will discuss implementation of
Regional Haze Action Plan for preventing and mitigating forest fires and
resulting smoke haze trans boundary pollution in the ASEAN region.
(3) 		Examinations of Master's, Post-Graduate Diploma Courses Under Way
		Examinations of master's courses and post-graduate diploma courses for
1997-98 academic year of Yangon University, Mandalay University, Institute of
Economics, Mawlamyine University and Taunggyi University under the Higher
Education Department of the Ministry of Education are being held from 23
February to 7 March.
(4)		National Policy Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and
Rational Use of Antimicrobial Drugs Opens 
		National Policy Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Rational
Use of Antimicrobial Drugs was held at Sedona Hotel on 24 February. The
workshop continues till 25 February.
(5)		Dissemination Workshop for Myanmar Programme of Action on Population and
Development (Draft) Opens
		Opening session of the Dissemination Workshop for Myanmar Programme of
Action on Population and Development (draft) cosponsored by Ministry of
Immigration and Population and the United Nations Fund for Population
Activities was held at International Business Centre on 24 February. The
purpose of this workshop is to disseminate a draft of the Myanmar Programme of
Action on Population and Development. This workshop has been sponsored jointly
by the Ministry of Immigration and Population and UNFPA. 
(6)		Delegation Leaves for Thailand
		A delegation led by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo left Yangon to
attend the third meeting of Health Secretaries of South-East Asia regional
countries to be held in Thailand from 24 to 28 February. The delegation will
also study hospital and primary health care services in Thailand.
(7)		Syringes and Electric Organ Presented to Myanmar Maternal and Child
Welfare Association 
		Japan-Myanmar Economic and Culture Promotion Association presented 1,000
sets of syringe for use at maternity clinic and an electric organ for child
care unit at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association in Yangon on 24
February.
(8)		Fourth Kidney Transplant Operation Successfully Performed 
		The fourth kidney transplant operation took place at the new Yangon General
Hospital on 24 February. The operation was performed by professors,
physicians, specialists, nurses and staff. Both the patient and the donor are
doing well. 
(9)		Myanmar Japan Sign Exchange of Notes on Debt Relief
		Minister for Finance and Revenue and Ambassador of Japan signed an exchange
of notes on debt relief at the ministry on 24 February. Japanese Government
was to grant Y 2 billion as debt relief to the Myanmar Government which repaid
the amount for the loan in February. The grant was the 19th of its kind
granted by the Japanese Government as debt relief assistance. The cash
assistance will be spent on purchasing machinery and equipment, raw materials
and accessories for the ministries and organizations.
OFFICE CALL IN YANGON ON 24 FEBRUARY
		Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received
Group General Manager Mr Amara Singam V and party of T Singh Group of
Companies of Malaysia at the Commission Office. They cordially discussed
economic and investment matters.
