Bangkok, March 8: Thai security forces arrested six members of a rebel
Karen rebel army after they illegally crossed into northwestern Thailand,
a report said on Sunday.

Thai soldiers and rangers stumbled across the boatload of rebels from the
Democratic Karen Buddhist Army during the regular patrol of the Salween
river in Sop Moei district of Mae Hong Son province, the Bangkok Post
reported. The six men were taken into custody after being found in
possession of two 9mm pistols, a shotgun, an M16 assault rifles and two
M26 grenades. The arrest prompted the residents of Ban Mae Sam Laeb
village to abandon their homes in fear of reprisal attacks from the DKBA,
which frequently makes raids into Thai villages from Burma to steal

Suu Kyi's Call to Women
The Hindu
9 March 1998

Bangkok: Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi marked International
Women's Day in Myanmar on Sunday with a call for equality for women,
saying discrimination hurts the human race. "It cannot be doubted that in
most countries today women, in comparison to men, still remain
underprivileged," Ms Suu Kyi said from Yangon in a statement. "It is only
by creating conditions under which women are given an equal opportunity
with men to develop their talents that our world will be able to reap the
full benefits of a healthy community. This is also a wonderful opportunity
for me to thank all those women from across the globe who have
demonstrated the most heart-warming solidarity for the cause of democracy
in Myanmar," she said. (Reuter)
