It is doubtful that a Burmese Buddhist can disown his son just by
announcing
in the newspaper. According to Burmese Buddhist Law (Dhammathat) only those
falls into the following categories can be disowned:

1. Swa nutta -a dog-like son
2. Dainnaka - one given by others
3. Thahawsu - one bought from others
4. Punna_kubbawa - one born by his wife by committing adultery
5. Kaithi_ta - one born out of wedlock or illegitimate son
6. Sata_bhatta - one given shelter because of poverty .
(Note : Romanized spelling may not be correct)

Onthe other hand the dhammathats do not require a boy, who has attained
puberty, to obtain the consent of his parent or guardian to enable him to
marry. On the contrary, the texts at Digest II, 133 inhibit parents from
objecting to the marraige of the son to a divorcee or widow, whom he has
seduced. (Maung Nyein v. Ma Myin (3 U.B.R. 75) and Maung Thein Maung v. Ma Saw
(6 Ran. 340) affirm the right of a boy, on attainment of puberty, to marry
without parental consent.
