(1) 		Meeting  2/98 on Organizing 24th Asia and Pacific Regional Conference
		The Working Committee for Organizing 24th Asia and Pacific Regional
Conference of the FAO held the meeting No 2/98 at the Ministry of Agriculture
and Irrigation on 13 March.  

(2)		Retransmission Station in Paletwa Begins Work
		Under the programme to implement development work for the border areas and
national races, a TV retransmission station was constructed in Paletwa, Chin
State.  The Myanma Radio and Television supervised construction work, which
was completed on 6 March, utilizing the funds allocated by the Department for
the Progress of Border Areas and National Races.  TV programmes reached the
region beginning  10 March morning.

(3)		Myanma Posts and Telecommunications to Use ThaiCom3 Satellite
Transponders in Domestic Services
		Myanma Posts and Telecommunications has reached agreement with Shinawatra
Satellite Public Co Ltd to use ThaiCom3 satellite transponders in its internal
satellite communication services.  Managing Director of MPT and Chairman and
Acting President of the company Mr Dumrong Kasemset signed the contract on 13
March.

(4)		Doctorate Courses to be Conducted
		Doctorate Courses on Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Zoology,  Botany, Geology,
Industrial Chemistry, Geography, History, Myanmar, Philosophy and Psyschology
will be conducted at Yangon University for 1998-99 academic year.  Entrance
examinations for the courses will be held.

(5)		Over 77 Kilos of Opium Seized in Phakant
		A combined team comprising members of defence services intelligence unit and
Phakant police station together with the witnesses, acting  on a tip-off,
searched the house of U Khaung Daung of Seikmu Village, Phakant township  on
17 February.  The authorities nabbed Sai Tun Kyaw of Nyaungshwe Hawgon Ward,
Taunggyi Township  together with W brand  580 tablets of orange colour
Amphetamine hidden in his leather jerkin in the house.  Afterwards, the
combined team seized Sai Aung of Loilem Township; Sai San Tun of Nyaung Shwe
Hawgon Ward, Taunggyi Township; Aung Mya of Nyaung phyu camp, Taunggyi
Township; Aik Aye of Tanmamway Village, Namhsam Township and Khaung Daung.
According to the information of the accused, the authorities searched a
vehicle on 23 February morning and seized 27 packets of opium weighing 51.187
kilos hidden in fuel tank and body?s floor 8819 and 23 packets of opium
weighing 26.602 kiols hidden between in mudguards and body and cushion of the
driver totalling 77.789 kilos. The team then searched Ma San San Myint of
Seikmu Village, in accord with the chains of the information.  They nabbed
443 tablets of stimulant Amphetamine which were packed by plastic bag and
hidden on her body.  Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotrophic Substances Law by Phakant Police Station.

OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 13 MARCH
(A)		Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs received President &
CEO of Amtelstar International Ltd Mr William Chan and members at his office.
(B)		Deputy Minister for Health received Obstetrics and Gynaecologist Dr Tim
Rutter of Marie Stopes International (MSI) at his office. Deputy Minister also
received Director George Fernando of South-East Asian Regional Office of World
Health Organization at his office. They discussed Myanmar- WHO cooperation for
production of main drugs and vaccines and primary health care services, clean
water, building fly-proof toilets and using radio telephone electronic system
for advanced  health care in remote regions.
