Singapore leader to visit Myanmar, Thailand

SINGAPORE, March 23 (Reuters) - Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong will
visit Myanmar (Burma) this week for the first time since it became a member of
the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the government said on
Monday.

Goh, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Shanmugam Jayakumar and an
18-member business delegation, will be in Yangon (Rangoon) on Tuesday and
Wednesday before heading to Thailand, a government statement said.

In Myanmar, Goh will meet Senior General Than Shwe, Prime Minister and
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council.

They will discuss bilateral cooperation, economic and political developments
in Myanmar and regional developments.

The statement said Goh, who last visited Thailand in June 1997, would meet
Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai during his two-day trip to Bangkok.
