BRC-J's Burmese Benefit Dinner in K

Burmese Benefit Dinner in Kyoto

Burmese Relief Center-Japan will hold its annual Burmese Benefit
Dinner/Dance and Bazaar on Sunday, May 17 at the Kyoto Co-op - Shimogamo
Center 2, 37 Takagi-cho, Shimogamo, Sakyo-ku KYOTO.

Unusual and exotic handmade gifts from Thailand, Burma, and refugee camps
along the border can be purchased at the Refugee Bazaar from 11 a.m.- 3
p.m.. Admission to the bazaar is free.

From 3 p.m., a full course authentic Burmese dinner will be served,
followed by classical Burmese music, traditional dances, and an entertaining
auction of Burmese arts and other rare items. The cost for the Dinner and
entertainment is 8,000 yen. (6000 yen for seniors over 60 and 4000 yen for
children under 12). All proceeds benefit Burmese students and refugees
struggling to survive in camps along the Thai/Burma border. (Please reserve
your place at the dinner!)

The Burmese military continues to practice ethnic cleansing against the
Shan, Karen, Mon, and Karenni ethnic minorities. Escape to Thailand has
become nearly impossible and there are informed estimates of over a million
internally displaced people trapped in Burma, in addition to the more than
150,000 refugees in camps on the Thai/Burma border. Most refugees are
suffering from malaria and malnutrition and lack adequate food, clothing,
blankets and medicine. This spring camps in Thailand housing ethnic Karen
have been attacked and burned, leaving thousands homeless and in desperate
need of help. BRC-J has just sent over $2,000 in emergency assistance for
these refugees. Last year BRC-J provided more than three million yen in
relief supplies, yet now the needs are even greater.

The Benefit Dinner also commemorates the eighth anniversary of the 1990
elections in Burma, won overwhelmingly by the National League for Democracy
but nullified by the military junta. BRC-J calls for the restoration of
democracy in Burma under the leadership of the winner of the elections,
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
