(1)		Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project

		Bo Myat Tun Bridge with reinforced concrete piers and steel beams links
Thaungdan Village on the eastern bank of Ayeyawady River with the place near
Kyeinbinhse Village on the western bank of Ayeyawady River in Nyaungdon
Township, Ayeyawady Division.  The total length of the bridge is 8,544 feet,
with the 6,164-feet-long main bridge and 2,380-feet-long approach structures,
28-feet-wide motorway and two five-feet-wide pedestrian lanes.  The safe
passage under the bridge is 360 feet wide, clearance is 57 feet high and the
bridge can bear 
60-ton loads.  Construction of the bridge began on 1 February 1996, and
efforts are being made to complete construction work as scheduled.  The bridge
on Yangon - Pathein Highway links Yangon with Ayeyawady Division and Rakhine
State, and will contribute a lot to economic development of the State.  The
Ayeyawady River is a natural barrier against sending agricultural produce from
the delta region to Yangon.  Bo Myat Tun Bridge is thus built. On completion
of the bridge, agricultural produce can be sent from the delta region to
Yangon within a short time.

(2)		30-Mile  Lashio-Kontha Section of Mandalay-Lashio-Muse  Union Highway
Commissioned 

		The 30-mile Lashio-Kontha section of Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Union Highway
undertaken by Diamond Palace Co Ltd was commissioned on 5 April.  Diamond
Palace Co Ltd entered into contract with Public Works on 22 July 1996 and the
contruction project began on 15 December 1996 and noted that inauguration of
Lashio-Kontha section will contribute a great deal toward smooth and secure
transport in northern Shan State.  It was the first successful step of the
local company Diamond Palace Co Ltd to be able to commission the section after
the contract had been signed. Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Union Highway is a
strategic road vital for transport between Myanmar and China and it can also
be called Sino-Myanmar Golden Gate Highway.  The Lashio-Muse section
undertaken by Asia World Co Ltd was put into service on 9 September 1997 and
completion of the Lashio-Kontha section will be added to greater progress of
the transport sector.  Shan State (North) is home to the nationalities such as
Shan, Kachin, Palaung, Kokang and Wa, and the government is utilizing plenty
of funds on border areas and national races development and the Union Highway
will uplift the life and economy in border region.  The virgin and fallow
lands along the Union Highway can be reclaimed for cultivation and the four-
pillar crops can be grown so that the agriculture sector will be enhanced and
the crops can be transported efficiently with the improvement of the road.

(3)		Single Unit Residences of Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City Project Handed
Over to Owners

		A ceremony to hand over single unit residences completed on the second phase
of Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City Project to owners with the grant, jointly
sponsored by Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development and
Olympic Co Ltd, was held at the Garden City in Dagon Myothit (East) on 5
April.  Tekkatho Yeikmon Garden City project began on 1 January 1996 and 96
single unit residences and short houses completed on the first phase were
handed over to owners in April 1997.  105 single unit residences were handed
over on second phase on 5 April.  The target on the third phase is 70%
complete.  It includes 150 single unit residences and short houses and 128
low-cost single unit houses.

(4)		Myanmar Medical Association Lecture on Knee Joint 11 April

		A lecture on Biomechanical Consideration of Anatomic Asian Knee Joint System
will be co-sponsored by Myanmar Medical Association and Agency for Myanmar
Osteomed at the MMA building, 249, Theinbyu Road,  at 10:30 am on 11 April.
Professor Kamal Bose of the National University of Singapore will lecture and
donate teaching aids to the Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital and MMA.

(5)		14th Convocation of University of Distance Education Continues

		The 14th Convocation of the University of Distance Education continued  for
the third day in the Convocation Hall of Yangon  University on 5 April.
Rector conferred arts degree on 1,125 graduates and science degree on 427.

(6)		3.276 Litres of Phensedyl Seized
		A combined team comprising members of Homalin special drug squad, personnel
of regional intelligence unit, regional battalion and police members, acting
on a tip-off, a powered boat which was about to leave for Htamanthi Village on
9 March.  A total of 3.276 litres phensedyl including  (19)125-millilitre
bottles and (18) 0.50-millilitre bottles of Phensedyl were seized from the bag
carried by Chit San of Htamanthi Village.  Action  was taken against him at
Homalin Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances
Law.
