New chief of Third Army Region will protect Salween

BANGKOK, April 9 -- Army Commander in Chief Gen Chettha Thanajaro expressed confidence
on Thursday that newly-appointed Third Army Region Commander Lt Gen Sommai Wichaworn
would be able to protect Salween National Park from further encroachment.
Sommai replaced Lt Gen Thanom Wacharaput on Wednesday who became special adviser
attached to the Army.
The park had been massively encroached upon. Authorities said logging tycoons hired Karen
refugees to fell down trees in the park so that they could disguise as logs imported from Burma.
