For Uplift of Women's Status Honour, Prestige

Perspectives, the NLM, Monday, 6 April 1998

We are today striving for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed
nation and discipline-flourishing democracy implementing the political,
economic and social objectives and for progress of the economic sector the
government departments are providing assistance to the private
entrepreneurs to enable them to run their businesses properly.

Economic development is vital for the success of the political and social
sectors and only when the political, economic and social sectors are strong
will a peaceful, modern and developed nation emerge in the near future.

At the third annual meeting of Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurial Association
for 1997-98, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt said the association made greater accomplishments year after
year during the three years due to close supervision of the EC members and
patrons and the support provided by the government.

MWEA's accomplishments during the previous year could be attributed to the
endeavours of member entrepreneurs, those who are supervising the
businesses and the intelligentsia and intellectuals.

In a bid to strive to boost family income, assistance has been provided for
vocational training of women and for the establishment of small-scale
businesses and loans are extended to poor families to be better able to
earn their living.

The Secretary-1 praised undertakings of women in their efforts in meetings,
workshops and courses organized by UN and other organizations. They
acquired knowledge and know-how and showed Myanmar women's active
participation and capabilities.

Today, neo-colonialist countries and their cohorts within the country are
resorting to subversive means to block Myanmar's economy and those
subverting under cover of democracy are attempting to jeopardize the
economy and prevent foreign investments with false accusations on
democracy, human rights and drugs, he said.

He urged MWEA to discharge a social duty for vitalization of Myanmar
women's conviction to uphold and preserve the traditions and safeguard the
race and to rebut the false accusations and oppose the neo-colonialists.

It is our hope that MWEA will continue to strive for materialization of its
aims for closer cooperation with other women's associations and social
organizations for uplift of status of women, safeguarding their honour and
prestige.
