Myanmar offers land to Indian farmers
NEW DELHI, April 27
Myanmar has offered vast tracts of its agricultural land on lease to Indian
farmers for the cultivation of rice, cotton and tea, the Union Minister of
State for Agriculture, Mr Som Pal,said today.
At a press conference here on his recent visit to Yangon, he said the
Myanmarese authorities were keen on inducting the Indian farmers to give a
boost to their agriculture and economy.
Mr. Som Pal signed on April 25 a memorandum of understanding for
cooperation in agriculture and allied areas with the Myanmarrese Minister
for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj. Gen. Nyunt Tin. Mr Som Pal said he had
also met the Myanmarese Prime Minister and senior Cabinet Ministers who
andorsed the call for Indo-Myanmar joint participation in farming.
The offer was part of Myanmar's efforts to open and reform economy.
He said millions of hectares including some in the fertile Irrawadi delta
would be thrown open for India participation. Myanmar being a high rainfall
area provided good scope for assured agricultural production.-UNI
