NEWS - Myanmar Seizes Illegal Timb

NOTE: So they'll take the lumbe and mills and use them for their own
greedy purposes. The SPDC/SLORC is stripping Burma of its hardwoods and
it doesn't care about the future consequences. Companies such as the
Thai " Watana Trading " sells it as furniture in the Washington, D.C.
metro area.

Myanmar Seizes Illegal Timber, Saw Mills

YANGON (May 19) XINHUA - Myanmar authorities seized over 130
tons of illegal sawn timber and four saw mills in the
country's Yangon
division last week, The New Light of Myanmar newspaper
reported
           Tuesday.

The seizures, made by a combined team of local forestry
departments
on last Thursday and Friday, were conducted in six villages
in the
           Taikkyi township of the division.

Action is to be taken against the illegal mill owners under
Myanmar's
           Forest Law, the report said.

Myanmar has recently stepped up its crackdown on illegal
production
of timber while encouraging legal production and export of
           value-added wood products.

Myanmar restricts export of logs. The country's Forest Law
enacted in
1992 bans the private sector from exporting teak logs.

According to official statistics, the country's export of
forest products,
including teak, hardwood and plywood and veneer, amounted to
125.7
million U.S. dollars in 1997, accounting for 14 percent of
the country's
           total export.
