Junta warms teachers to curb unrest

Rangoon, June 6;

One of the Burma's most senior ruling generals has warmed school
teachers to curb alleged attempts by dissident to spark political unrest
in the country's education system, official newspaper reported on
Saturday.
The warming by Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt precedes the return of student to
primary, middle and high school after three months annual holiday on
Thursday. Universities have been closed since unrest in December 1996.
Lt. Gen. Nyunt, the powerful head of military intelligence, urged
teachers in a speech on Friday to be aware of  "subversive elements"
seeking to created disturbances. " It is necessary to be vigilant
against attempts by internal traitors and some neo-colonialist to
created disturbances in the education sectors," Lt. Gen. Nyunt said.
Through he did not mention her by name, Lt. Gen. Nyunt appeared to be
referring to Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.  Ms. Suu Kyi
advocacy of democracy and human rights is viewed by ruling SPDC as a
plot orchestrated by foreign powers.(AP)
