UNOCAL'S ASIAN INVESTMENTS CONDEMNED

AS MORALLY BANKRUPT AT ANNUAL=20

SHAREHOLDERS MEETING

June 1, 1998 Los Angeles =96 In front of the annual meeting of Unocal, the
energy resource company, in Brea CA, environmentalists and Burmese exiles
paraded a life-sized colorfully decorated Asian elephant crafted of
recycled materials, and waved placards describing Unocal=92s CEO Roger
Beach as a "corporate criminal." Inside, activists relentlessly
confronted Mr. Beach about his company=92s gas pipeline project in Burma
and other controversial ventures in Asia.

Dr. Carol Richards of LA based Burma Forum spoke of the "appalling
metamorphosis" of Unocal into "a mercenary outfit of rogue adventurers,
who will make a deal, no matter how dirty and no matter how risky, with
the most reprehensible regimes on earth." Condemnation of Unocal=92s
partnership with the Burmese junta was echoed by members of the Feminist
Majority, including Ms. Mavis Leno (wife of talk show host Jay Leno), who
challenged Unocal=92s pipeline deal with Afghanistan=92s Islamic
fundamentalist militia. Outside, several women protested by dressing in
the head-to-toe coverings that the Taliban commands all females in
Afghanistan to wear.

Presenting news of attacks on elephants, and use of people for forced
labor, by Burmese troops securing Unocal=92s pipeline, noted human rights
investigator Mr. Ka Hsaw Wa, director of EarthRights International,
commented that villagers in the pipeline area say that Unocal-sponsored
pipeline projects there "are like when the man throws leftover bones to
the dog." A recent report commissioned by Unocal about the effects of the
pipeline was criticized for inaccuracy and faulty research methods.

Mr. Kelly Quinn-, of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers labor union,
presented a resolution asking Unocal to explain links between its
partnership with the Burmese junta and money laundering for Burma=92s
massive heroin trade. He called Unocal=92s continued presence in Burma
symptomatic of the corporation=92s "complete moral bankruptcy." A heated
exchange between CEO Beach, and Fr. Joseph La Mar, a Maryknoll Catholic
priest, ended the meeting. Fr. La Mar, a recent visitor to the Burma
pipeline area, insisted on the absolute need for higher ethical
principals in choosing where and how Unocal will operate overseas.

Photographs of demonstration available.
