              28 officials to face
              illegal logging
              probe

The Forestry Department has set up a committee to investigate
28 officials implicated in illegal logging activities in the Salween
national park and wildlife sanctuary on the Thai-Burmese border.

The department said in a statement the move followed a secret
report in May from the permanent secretary for agriculture listing
the names and ranks of the 28 forestry officials.

Disciplinary action has already been taken against seven of them.

The department said the accused would receive fair treatment
and advised them to prepare evidence and witnesses to be
              presented to the committee.
