Asian and Pacific Organisation of international Federation of Commercial
Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees (APRO FIET) Calls for
International Action


APRO FIET Executive Committee, meeting in Tokyo on 21-22 June 1998
reiterates its condemnation of the military dictatorship of Burma and all
violations of human and trade union rights by SLORC.

The Committee:

Condemns the SLORC for the recent orders which sentenced six young
activists to death;

Supports the request made by the national League for Democracy (NLD) to the
SLORC to allow the convening of Parliament in accordance with the time
table set by the NLD;

Requests all APRO FIET affiliates to support a world - wide day of action
in the event of a refusal of SLORC to convene the Parliament;

Notes with appreciation the recent decision of the USA to extend economic
santions against SLORC for a further year and;

Calls on nations of the world to impose economic and diplomatic sanctions
against the SLORC until human rights and democracy have been restored in
the country.

The APRO FIET Executive Committee pledges its support to the democracy
movement, including the NLD and the FTUB, in their struggle and calls on
all affiliates to support the NLD in their bid to convene Parliament and
prevent the SLORC from carrying out the death sentences of the six young
activists.
