3.4 Kilograms of Heroin Seized in Jakarta, Indonesia

            JAKARTA (July 1) XINHUA - Indonesian customs
            officers and police detectives have arrested a
            Myanmar man at the Jakarta airport for allegedly
            smuggling 3.4 kilograms of high-grade heroin into
            the country, the local press reported Wednesday. 

            The 34-year-old man was handcuffed upon arrival at
            the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Monday
            night from Bangkok on Thai Airways, the report
            quoted National Police Detective Corps commander
            Brig. Gen. Da's Bachtiar as saying. 

            The drug, which has an estimated street value here
            of 4 billion rupiah (about 276,000 U.S. dollars) was
            wrapped in plastic bags and allegedly strapped
            under the man's bag. 

            During police questioning, the man reportedly
            admitted that he was hired as a courier to smuggle
            the drug to Jakarta. He was to hand it over to the
            owner, a Nigerian staying here, he said. 

            Meanwhile, a prosecutor asked Central Jakarta
            District Court Monday to sentence a 35-year-old
            Myanmar man to death for smuggling 4.4 kilograms
            of heroin into Indonesia from Bangkok. 

            The man was arrested on November 14 last year at
            Tanah Abang Indah Hotel in Central Jakarta, the
            report said.
