Protest in Tokyo 7 July (r)

Re: Protest in Tokyo 7 July
===========================

How can we forget this day? The day that we could never forget was
7 July 1962.

Rangoon University students were the first to protest against the
military rule on this day calling for the restoration of democracy since
General Ne Win seized power in Burma on 2 March 1962.

It was on the evening of this day when the soldiers armed with newly
issued G-3 riffles started shooting the unarmed students protesters.
Within minutes bodies of hundreds of potential leaders were lying dead
all over the Rangoon University campus. Until then, never did we believe
that our own soldiers can be ordered to kill the students ruthlessly
just because they dare to speak up their mind.

Many parents lost their sons. But, no regrets came from General Ne Win.
Instead, he defended his actions. He said "I have no alterantive but to
meet 'dah' with 'dah'(dagger)and spear with spear". What we did not know
then was that it was just the beginning of many long years of
totalitarian military rules as Ne Win can manupulate the army to act
against the populace anytime he wants.

It has been shown that BSPP and SLORC have learned the ropes. They all
listened to Ne Win. As though it was not enough, indications are are
showing that the present military regime is learning the ropes too. SPDC
now treatened to kill or imprison the opposition leaders instead of
agreeing to go to the negotiation table. Will the SPDC screen the repeat
of 1988? Or, will they agree to talk as an intermediate step?

(It was easy for General Than Shwe to say that he bears no grudge on the
oppositions and that SPDC did not intend to hold on to power for long.)

The recent NLD movement is applaudible. Let the SPDC spit out what is in
their hearts. It's your move. The truth will prevail.

"7th July Ma Mai Naing". (Don't forget 7th July 1962).

(Most of the Generals who are now '52' years or older are most likely
to have witnessed this eventlyful day.)
