Burmese Dissidents Held in Japan

 Urgent news

Three Burmese dissidents are detained by Japanese Immigration Bureau

On July 24th, one Burmese and one Irani asylum seekers in Japan were
granted refugee status by Japanese government. This approval is the first
time since 1995.

However, on the same day, Tokyo Immigration Bureau detained three Burmese
who are not granted refugee status. They were summoned to the Tokyo
Immigration Bureau and detained at the detention centre on their arrival.
In the detention centre, they were noted that their application had been
refused by the Japanese government and were informeed that they were in the
process of repatriation. When they are deported to Burma, they face
certain risk of being charged and subjected to imprisonment because of
their pro-democracy activities.
The Lawyers Group which is supporting asylum seekers from Burma strongly
protested against the Ministry of Justice arguing that this is the
violation of International Refugee Standards and the guideline set forth by
the UNHCR.
Mr.Uezono, the information officer of the Tokyo Immigration Bureau, said
on 28th, "We know the guideline of the UNHCR. But these guidelines have no
legal effect on Japanese immigration law."
