Suu Kyi 'plotted to incite unrest'

YANGON -- A powerful member of Myanmar's ruling junta has delivered a
strong attack on opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, saying she colluded
with foreign embassies to incite unrest, state-run newspapers reported
yesterday. The newspapers quoted Lt-General Khin Nyunt, Secretary One of
the ruling State Peace and Development Council, as telling a teachers'
seminar on Saturday that Ms Suu Kyi's recent car sit-in protest was an
orchestrated move to destabilise the political situation.

"The so-called National League for Democracy leader, who is always
criticising and opposing the government, attempted to go to some places in
the delta and midland to incite riot and cause unrest," he said.

Ms Suu Kyi is reportedly recuperating from dehydration after being forced
to end the six-day protest which began on July 24 when she was stopped from
meeting her supporters.

The US, the European Union and Australia have criticised the Myanmar
government and asked the UN to push the ruling military to start a dialogue
with Ms Suu Kyi's party.

But Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accused foreign embassies of working with her to
oppose the government and said the people of Myanmar were duty-bound to
crush their activities. -- Reuters
