ALP Statement on 10th anniversary o (r)

ALP Statement On 10th Anniversary Of 4-Eight Day

1. August 8, 1998- is the 10th Anniversary of the pro-Democracy movement of
Burma, began by the students. The day of 8-8-88- will always remain as a
historic, unforgettable and prestigious day in the history of the country.

2. On this August 8, students, Buddhist monks and people from all walks of
life had honorably struggled for the opening of the door to democracy,
facing hails of bullets from the guns of the militaty dictatorship which
was in a fit of savagery, like a wild animal.

3. In this people's movement, hundreds had sacrificed their lives. Some
survivors are being held in prisons and subjected to various forms of
torture and indignity up to this day. Thousands had to flee to neighboring
countries and democratic countries around the world, for refuge.

4. Though the 4-eight democratic movement has reached its 10th anniversary,
there has been no progress with regard to the attainment of democratic and
human rights, and ethnic rights. The people are still being subjected to
torture and execution by various means. Especially, the ethnic
nationalities in the border regions have to flee into neighboring countries
because of the increase in brutal military operations by the SPDC military
dictatorship.

5. The SPDC is still shamelessly ruling the country, after blatantly
refusing to hand over power to the NLD which won 82% of the seats in May
1990 elections. It is still ignoring the demand of the NLD and Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi to convene the parliament by August 21. On the other hand, the
dictatorship is obstructing the movement of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the
NLD members by various means.

6. Realizing that it is never easy to dislodge the meat loaf in the jaws of
a tiger, we must boldly carry on the struggle with alertness. We must also
systematically link the struggle for democracy and ethnic freedom, and
continue our struggle.

7. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of 4-eight movement, we would
like to appeal to democratic countries and organizations to increase
pressure on the SPDC to agree to tri-partite dialogue, which is the most
appropriate way for settling the objective political problems of Burma by
political means.
