Unofficial translation of the August 7 Announcement by the National
League for Democracy

                                        The National League for
Democracy
                                        No. (97/8) West Shwegondine
Street
                                            Bahan Township, Rangoon.

                                            Announcement No. 22 (8/98)

1. The Deputy Minister for Home Affairs today sent a letter to the
chairman of the National League for Democracy in which "an invitation"
was extended for a meeting with him on 8-8-98.

2. The opinion of the National League for Democracy regarding that
letter is:

 a. An "invitation" without any explanation is not enough reason for the
chairman to make a visit. The purpose of the "invitation" needs to be
elaborated.

 b. The National League for Democracy, being a political party, will
consider its options once it knows the reason for the invitation. In
addition, it will also give the National League for Democracy an
opportunity to make necessary preparations.

3. Moreover, we cannot accept the conditions set by Major Thuya, the
courier who delivered the letter to the chairman. He stated that, with
the exception U Tin Oo, U Kyi Maung and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the
chairman can bring along with him any member of the Central Executive
Committee to the meeting. The courier was told that he should look up
Notification No. 245 of the Elections Commission for reference.
