Myanmar Arrest 6 Americans

Myanmar Detains 18 Foreigners for Delivering Pamphlets, AP Says

Yangon, Myanmar, Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The Myanmar government arrested 18
foreigners for handing out leaflets the military regime considered seditious,
the Associated Press reported. Six of the foreigners detained in the country,
formerly known as Burma, are U.S. citizens, three are Thai, three are
Malaysian, three are Indonesian, two are Philippine and one is Australian, the
AP said. Their arrests came a day after the tenth anniversary of an uprising
against military rule in which 3,000 people are believed to have died.

``The arrest of Americans in Burma for exercising basic human rights is
outrageous and they should be released immediately,'' said P. J. Crowley, a
spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council.
