8.8.89 for 8.8.88 Fast and Demonstration in Washington, D.C. ... and
around the world.
10 August, 1998

Rangoon Post

Washington, D.C. day began with a solemn ceremony at the Burmese
Temple outside of Washington. Most people came together by the White
Whitehouse in Lafayette Park at 8:00 AM for 8 hour fast of 88 people.
There were actually more than 100 people and most of them were fasting.
Burmese, Mon, Chin, Arakanese and a about 12 Americans from Florida,
Maryland, Virginia, New York, South Carolina, Indiana, California,
Pennsylvania and Japan all came to meet here in Washington.

The fast was quiet as people spoke on behalf of their organizations
as well as an actor from Beyond Rangoon. A few congressmen sent letters
to be read this day as well. During the entire day, 3 different
documentaries were made about this and the students.

The 3 hour demonstration was very memoriable. Most speakers were
very angery as they screamed out their message to the residence. There
was no visible life at the residence. No more pictures are being snapped
of the so-called "axe-handles" /"traitors" to be sent back to Rangoon.

Before lighting the candles Four number '8' shaped flowered-weaths (
8 8 88) were respectfully walked over one-by-one. Later all mourners
set red carnations, more than 100, on the 8.8.88 wreaths. During the
laying of the flowers, the Rebel's song was sung, the song set to the
music of "Dust in the Wind".

One of the American mourners mentioned that "...when passing by the
8.8.88 wreaths, I felt a strong solemn presence. It really hit me."
