China Plans to Build $7.66 Bln Railway to Tibet (as well as links with
planned railways to Thailand and Burma)

            BEIJING, Aug 13 (Reuters)- China plans to build a $7.66
billion railway
            between the remote Western region of Tibet and the
southwestern
            province of Yunnan, the Digest Weekly said on Thursday. 

            The Ministry of Railways had approved a feasibility study on
the
            1,654-km (1,028-mile) railroad from Dali city in Yunnan to
Tibet's
            capital city of Lhasa, the newspaper said. 

            Estimated to cost more than 63.6 billion yuan ($7.66
billion), the
            railway would provide the shortest route betweeen Tibet and
the coast
            as well as links with planned railways to Thailand and
Burma, it said. 

            More than 710 km (441 miles) of tunnels and bridges would
carry the
            Yunnan-Tibet railway through some of China's harshest
mountain
            terrain, the newspaper said. It gave no further details.
