BURMA'S MILITARY MUST INCLUDE DASSK

Media Release
August 19, 1998

BURMA'S MILITARY MUST INCLUDE AUNG SAN SUU KYI IN DIALOGUE

The ABSDF is calling on Burma's military rulers to include Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi in future talks to show it is sincere and
willing to solve the country's political crisis through a
meaningful dialogue.

The call comes after the State Peace and Development Council
(SPDC) held talks with the Chairman of the National League for
Democracy (NLD), U Aung Shwe.

The ABSDF believes that the 45-minute meeting between the SPDC
and the NLD was a result of mounting international pressure on
the military and pressure from the NLD to convene parliament by
Friday, August 21.

ABSDF Foreign Affairs Secretary Aung Naing Oo said that to show
its willingness to talk, the military must first lift
restrictions on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

"A 45-minute meeting is a first step, but it's simply not enough.
The SPDC must cease its intimidation of NLD officials and Members
of Parliament, and also release all political prisoners. It
should also withdraw its security forces from the streets, the
presence of which has created tension among the people.

"The ABSDF is also urging the people of Burma to stand by Daw
Aung San Su Kyi and the NLD, and show their support for the
party's demand to convene parliament," Aung Naing Oo said.

The ABSDF will continue to call for democracy in Burma and voice
concerns about ongoing human rights violations carried out by the
military. The ABSDF also urges the international community to
continue to closely monitor the situation in Burma.
