Aung San Suu Kyi security must be ensured: UN body

       Thu 20 Aug 98 - 15:14 GMT

GENEVA, Aug 20 (AFP) - A UN human rights body Thursday urged the
Myanmar government to ensure the security
of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her National
League for Democracy.

A resolution on human rights activists adopted by a UN subcommission
requests Myanmar authorities to "in
particular guarantee her freedom of movement and expression."

The resolution, backed by 21 of the subcommission's 24 experts in a
secret ballot, also urges the government to
allow the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myamar to visit the
country.

The resolution came as the Nobel peace laureate was Thursday spending
her ninth day in a minibus parked on a
small bridge 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Yangon after being blocked
from travelling to meet provincial
       supporters.

Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD has demanded the parliament elected in 1990 be
convened by Friday. The opposition won
the polls by a landslide but the junta has refused to relinquish power.

The NLD on Wednesday urged the public to support the convening of
parliament, saying democracy was in the
interests of the country's 45 million people.

The subcommission is composed of independent experts who periodically
examine the situation in countries that
       have signed human rights treaties.

It issues opinions and recommendations which are subsequently
transmitted to the UN Human Rights Commission.

The HRC gathers each year in Geneva for six weeks of debate.
