Police deployed in Burma

Hundreds of police have been deployed at key intersections around the
Burmese capital, Rangoon, amid rumours that the opposition is planning
further protests.

Reports have emerged of a second anti-government demonstration on Monday
night.

Diplomats said the rally outside the Rangoon Institute of Technology was
violently broken up by the military, several hours after students outside
Rangoon University were dispersed. The military government has warned the
opposition National League for Democracy not to press ahead with its
demands to convene a meeting of the Parliament elected in 1990.

The opposition leader, Aung Sang Suu Kyi, is reported to be suffering from
dehydration and other complaints after completing her latest protest
against travel restrictions in which she spent nearly two weeks at the
roadside.
