Successful Protest Outside of Thai

SUCCESSFUL PROTEST OUTSIDE OF THAI CONSULATE IN LOS ANGELES!
More than 20 People, mainly Burmese, protested outside of the Thai
Consulate in Los Angeles on Friday, for about 2 hours. The Free Burma
Coalition activists were protesting the Thai government's announcement that
it plans to deport 16 Burmese students arrested in Bangkok after protesting
outside the Burmese embassy there. We were also protesting the Thai
government's continued policy of "constructive engagement" with the brutal
Burmese regime.

Demonstrators chanted, "Human Rights and Student Lives - SAVE IT, SAVE IT"
and "Constructive Engagement, GARBAGE!, GARBAGE!" After demonstrating
in front of the consulate, the protestors entered the building and asked to
meet with the Consular General. The consulate staff asked that we
select three representatives to meet with the staff and three Burmese were
selected. The three met with the consular general for more than 30
minutes while the rest waited in a room inside the consulate.

Reports from the meeting are that the Consular General was receptive and
sympathetic and promised to convey our message to his government. The
Consular General reportedly stated that the people of Thailand support the
people of Burma in their fight for human rights and democracy.

In the coming weeks, the Los Angeles Free Burma Coalition plans to protest
other consulates of ASEAN nations who continue to hide behind the lie of
"constructive enagement" while supporting the ruthless regime in Burma.
