Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu kyi is scheduled to meet today with
foreign diplomats, a move which may antagonise her country's military rulers.

Mrs Suu Kyi is locked in a bitter battle with the junta which took power in
1988 and refuses to turn over power to a parliament democratically elected
in 1990, when Mrs Suu Kyi's party won a landslide victory in the polls.

A United States embassy spokesman described the planned get-together as a
routine of meeting of diplomats with Mrs Suu Kyi to discuss relations
between her party, the National League for Democracy, and the government.

The meeting was also intended to "to folster dialogue, national
reconciliation and a peaceful transition to democracy," said the spokesman.

The authorities in the past have occassionally blocked Mrs Suu Kyi from
meeting
with foreign diplomats , but it was unclear what they would do this time.

The league last week announced it would unilaterally convene a
parliamentary session. The government has given strong warnings that would
be illegal.

*Mrs Suu Kyi would be allowed to sit in during talks between her party and
the country's ruling junta, Philippines diplomatic sources said yesterday.

The sources quoted the Philippines embassy in Burma as saying the junta had
bowed to demands by the NLD that Mrs Suu Kyi should be allowed to attend
confidence-building talks.

However, the sources did not say when these talks would be held or what
issue would be discussed.
