OTTAWA EMBASSY FOGBOUND IN AUGUST

OTTAWA EMBASSY FOGBOUND IN AUGUST

Rebuttal to "the View from the Myanmar Embassy in Ottawa".

Part I

It must be foggy in Ottawa despite the beautiful weather we are enjoying

this summer or is it just that windows at the SPDC Embassy have not been

cleaned since it was rented. It would be better for you to come out and
see the World and talk to people. Are you afraid to do so? Is Big
Brother
watching you?

To say that the people of Myanmar are NOT cowed by the ruthless torture
of the SPDC is a deliberate misstatement of the truth. Do you really
believe what you are saying? Is it possible to discuss the rising cost
of
living in a bazaar? Can anyone offer an alternate suggestion to a
junior
officer in the districts? Is it possible to get a lawyer to help with
some
unfounded accusation? Does one dare to speak with a foreigner? Do
professionals get to attend international conferences and submit papers
or discuss without permission from the junta? Can one even trust one's
neighbours?

Concerning your view that Myanmar is not yet a democracy but that it is
moving towards a multiparty democratic system from the massive
destructive anarchy it suffered ten years ago. Do you choose to model
Burma on the
examples of China, Laos & Vietnam in working towards democracy ?

The people of Burma had a democratic form of governance before WW II and

after the Independence in 1948. But those who were entrusted with
upholding the Constitution destroyed the country and have kept the whole

nation hostage since 1961. The anarchy suffered ten years ago was
brought on by "authorities" who emptied the jails. They created the
anarchy and
then enforced martial laws so that they would appear as "Saviors" to the

civilian population. The people have seen through these lies.

Concerning the election of 1990: Every Burmese citizen understood the
General Election of 1990 to be a mandate to form a government and rule
the country. The least that the people expected was that the elected
representative of the people would form an interim government to take
over the power from the military led SLORC regime. People are fed up
with
seeing uniformed persons performing outlandish deeds like laying the
foundation
for a new pagoda or presiding at a monk's funeral.

Concerning the National Convention Committee: This is nothing but a
group of a yes-men who will agree to whatever the Junta proposes. If,
as you
stated, the 1990 election was held to form an assembly that was intended

to oversee the development of a national constitution, why were the
elected
representatives not given the task? Why does the Junta have to decide
on the composition of the NCC?

The "legal delegates" did not attend a dialogue -- it was a monologue.
Those on stage read out "proposals" and the silent, stoic "legal
delegates" showed their hands in agreement. The military was accustomed
to this
"knee-jerk" response from years of practice under the BSPP government.
They made sure that the delegates were the same "knee-jerk" responders
of the BSPP era, who would trade their soul for little morsels from the
Junta.
I pity those "intellectuals" who could not sleep well.
