Statement on the political crack down by the SPDC on the opposition
(No. 9/98)

8th September 1998

1. It has been learnt that the military junta, calling itself the State
Peace and Development Council (SPDC), has, since 5th September 1998
increased its unjust oppression at various levels by unlawfully arresting,
restricting movements and intimidating MPs of NLD and members of the NLD.

2. Those who have been subject to such cruel actions are the MPs who have
been forced to resign and former members of the NLD, former political
prisoners and leaders of the banned political parties. They are being kept
by the authorities at military intelligence quarters, police cells and the
military guest house.

3. The military regime has detained about 80 % of MPs from the NLD. Among
them, some are being forced to resign, some are being forced to reject a
parliament scheduled by the NLD, and some have been taken into the
interrogation centres once they refuse.

4. Therefore, such actions of the SPDC reveal that they still ignore the
aspirations of the people expecting the convening of parliament. It can
also be seen that they do not have any desire for the restoration of
democracy and national reconciliation in Burma.

We, the Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS), strongly denounce such
cruel oppression by the SPDC. We seriously urge the people of Burma as
well as international organizations and the people from all over the world
to continue their pressure on the military regime.
