Germany condemns repression in Myanmar

BONN, Sept 9 (AFP) - Germany on Wednesday condemned "the fresh wave of
repression and intimidation" by Myanmar's ruling junta against the
opposition.

In a statement, German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said the detentions of
opposition activists were "unjust." The junta was "again trampling on human
rights and democracy," he added.

"This kind of policy of repression is leading Burma (Myanmar) into complete
international isolation," Kinkel said.

He urged military authorities to open a political dialogue with opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi and with representatives of the country's ethnic
minorities.

The government in Yangon should also agree to allow a UN special envoy to
visit. In August, authorities turned down a proposal to send an envoy by UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan.
