National League for Democracy
No: (97/b) West Shwegondine Road
Bahan, Rangoon
Statement No: 47 (8/98)
1. The National League for Democracy is a legally constituted political
party and registered as such under the Political Parties Registration
Law. As such the league has its head office, its signboard, its flag and
its seal and other devices which are necessary symbols of any
respectable organisation.
2. The authorities frequently grab and arrest members who leave the head
office and thrust them into waiting motor vehicles. A specific example
of this is that of Maung Mya Sein, a member of the youth wing, who was
leaving the head office building on 8.9.98 at about 4:00 p.m.
3. At the time of this incident, many members inside the office who saw
what happened were very indignant and had to be pacified. This offensive
behaviour by the authorities is an affront and insult to the National
League for Democracy and could cause loss of respect for the
authorities. Moreover, it can lead to undesirable and head on
confrontation. Therefore such action is strongly condemned.
