US embassy in Yangon suspends visa operations amid security review
Sat 12 Sep 98 - 06:11 GMT
BANGKOK, Sept 12 (AFP) - The US embasy in Yangon has stopped
issuing non-immigrant visas amid a security review prompted
by last month's bombings of two missions in Africa, an embassy
spokesman said Saturday.
"We suspended non-immigrant visa operations while we review
security," the spokesman said from the Myanmar capital by
telephone.
"It has nothing to do with the local situation at all," the
spokesman added, referring to escalating political tensions in Myanmar.
Washington has ordered US embassies and other facilities to check
security after the August 7 bombings of its missions in Nairobi
and Dar es Salaam which killed 257 people.
Residents said security had already been tightened at the Yangon
embassy, with extra Myanmar police deployed and parking of cars
in the immediate vicinity banned.
