The Statement of National United Party of Arakan on the demand of NLD to
the SPDC to convene parliament within 60 days
(The 24th July 1998)

Known to all that the National League for Democracy (NLD) has been
bravely demanding the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) of the
military regime to hold the Parliamentary Assembly within 60 days before
the terminal date of August 21.

We, the NUPA, cordially welcome and recognize it as a just demand
of NLD, the landslide winner of 1990 elections in Burma, in accordance
with the will and specific characteristics of the oppressed people of
Burma who fervently voted to it.

The 1990-election held on May 27 under the State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) regime was overwhelmingly recognized as a
"Free and Fair" by both at home and abroad. The SLORC's promise to hand
over the State Power to the election winner was also expected to be in
practice. But it was betrayed by the SLORC itself and beyond that, the
election result was unrecognized and kept aside.

Yet, the NLD, the spear-heading political party of Burma, exercise
the politics on the political ground by repeatedly demanding "Dialogue" as
a principal means of peaceful political solution with the SPDC. Instead of
welcoming it, the SPDC commits all sorts of hostile actions against the
NLD.

Here, the vigilance, courage and patience of the NLD in
time-taking until the entire people of Burma and of the world reach the
time of their intolerance and unforgiveness over the military regime, SPDC
today, are remarkable.

We, the NUPA, therefore, on behalf of the entire people of Arakan,
profoundly recognize and support to the NLD's political demand for holding
Parliamentary Assembly within 60 days as the just and correct political
process in right time and right deed on the people's will.
