Myanmar authorities claim surrender of "insurgents"

       Thu 17 Sep 98 - 14:25 GMT

BANGKOK, Sept 17 (AFP) - Twenty anti-government "insurgents" have
surrendered to the Myanmar military authorities, state-run
       television in Yangon said Thursday.

The "insurgents" included pro-democracy students from the All
Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF) and former members of
the Communist Party of Burma as well as of the ethnic Karen, Shan
and Rakhine minorities, TV Myanmar said in a dispatch
       monitored here.

The surrenders of the activists along with their weapons took
place between August 1 and 31 at three army regional commands, the
       report added.

The ABSDF was set up in the jungles along the Thai-Myanmar border
by pro-democracy students who fled Yangon and other cities
after the military took power in a bloody coup in 1988.
