Welcomes appointment of Parliament Chair

A majority of Burma's elected M.P.s have now authorized the formation of a
ten-member Representative Committee  to act behalf of the entire People's
Parliament to carry out the "operation of law and the fulfillment of our
obligation and duty to the people to convene the People's Parliament."  Thus
far, 250 Members of Parliament, comprising 54.6% of the Parliament's
surviving members have authorized the Committee to act on their behalf. Four
parties representing a total of 41 Members of Parliament from the Shan,
Rakhine, Mon and Zomi ethnic groups have also announced their support of the
People's Parliament.

Today, Dr. Sein Win of the NCGUB announced, "the Members of Parliament have
the mandate of the people to lead the country.  The Representative Committee
now has the mandate of the MPs to lead the parliament.  The NCGUB and each
of the ten MPs who serve in it join in recognizing the Representative
Committee and the actions it will take." The new committee's first actions
were to suspend the legal effect of decrees made by the military junta
during the last ten years subject to ratification by the People's Parliament
and to appoint Dr. Saw Mra Aung as Chairman of the Parliament.

U Bo Hla Tint, an NLD MP who also serves in the NCGUB added "we welcome the
appointment of Dr. Saw Mra Aung as Chairman."  The Committee has vowed to
form the People's Parliament by the end of the month.
