Anti-Myanmar junta protest in Dhaka on 10th anniversary

       Fri 18 Sep 98 - 09:01 GMT

DHAKA, Sept 18 (AFP) - A group of expatriate Myanmar nationals
staged a protest here Friday against the country's military junta
on the 10th anniversary of its takeover of power in Yangon,
witnesses said.

Some 50 protestors including children carried banners and marched
through downtown Dhaka calling for an end to alleged
repression and demanded MPs from Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition
National League for Democracy (NLD) be freed.

The protest was called by the Bangladesh chapter of the Rakhine
Democracy Forces (Burma) which in a statement also appealed to
the junta to give in to an NLD demand for parliament to be
convened.

Aung San Suu Kyi has vowed to convene the parliament elected in
1990 in which her NLD won a majority. The junta refused to
recognise the result and allow parliament to sit.

The State Peace and Development Council, the official name of the
junta which until recently was known as the State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC), assumed power on Septemebr 18, 1988
after weeks of pro-democracy demonstrations.

The anniversary came a day after Myanmar's government-in-exile
said an opposition plan to convene parliament could split the
powerful military and called on the international community to
support the move.
