CNF supports 10-Members Committee representing elected Members of
Parliament in Burma

Chin National Front (CNF) on 19th September 1998 issued a statement in
support of formation of 10 members-committee representing elected Members
of Parliament in Burma. The committee, which reportedly had a mandate of
arrested Members of Parliament, was formed by NLD and its alliance on 16th
September. Formation of the committee came after the military regime
arrested more than 170 Members of Parliament in four months to prevent
NLD's attempt to go ahead with its holding a parliament session of 459
Members of Parliament who were elected in May 1990. CNF in its statement
strongly supports NLD's current efforts of convening the parliament in
Burma.

Chin National Front is one of the armed ethnic groups still taking up
armed struggle against the military junta in Burma. It was formed on 20th
March 1988 with Chin national activists fighting for the restoration of
democracy and self-determination of Chin nationals in Burma. Dr. Swi Khar,
spokesperson and In-Charge of Foreign Affairs of Chin National Front told
this reporter :"It (formation of the committee) is reflecting the demands
of the entire people of Burma and NLD is implementing the verdict of the
people with it. We demand the military regime to recognize the committee
and release all political prisoners immediately."

There were three meetings between the CNF and military government over the
cease-fire from 1994 onwards. But the talks failed as CNF reportedly
insisted on political dialogue to solve the country's problems and it was
declined by the government. However, CNF is ready to work together with
the future democratic government in solving country's complex problems.
Dr. Swi Khar said :"If the 10-members committee forms a provisional
government, firstly that government should announce a general amnesty and
cease-fire in the whole country. Then, there should be a National
Convention in which the representatives of ethnic nationalities and
democratic forces are participated to write the constitution of the
country."
