Bakatha Update

Wednesday- 23rd September, 1998
Around midday, over 100students gathered in front of the Nilar Biriyanee
shop between 29th and 30th streets in Pabedan township.The students hoisted
the students union flag, chanted slogans and staged short demonstration
calling for the- People's Parliament and a People's Government, defend the
People's Government and Down with the Military Regime.
It lasted for about fifteen minutes and then the Military Intelligence
arrived in mufti and tried to arrest the person who had hoisted the union
flag. It was reported that three leading activists of the Bakatha were
arrested near 29th street and Anawratha Street.
Also there was a hit and run demonstration near Mingalar Market, Tamwe
Township. The military intelligent arrived in mufti. They blow and kicked
two students and then captured. 
	

Thursday- 24th September, 98
Around 4 O'clock in the about 50students gathered at the Laydaunkan Road
side of the Sanpya market in Thingagyun township. They hoisted the student
union flag and chanted slogans. The gathering was joined by workers and the
public and grew to about 500.
The Military Intelligence in mufti arrived about 20 minutes later and
attacked the crowd with battons. They arrested the students and took them
away in a waiting Mazada T-2000 light truck.

Note: It is reported that this tactic of the military intelligence arriving
in mufti is being employed through a special unit led by Col.Chit Naing. It
is reported that this Col.Chit Naing and some of his thugs underwent a "
Public Riot Control training " in Malaysia. This unit is controlled by
Major Myo Myint of the (26) Military Intelligence unit based near the
Bailey Bridge entrance of North Dagon.
