The Military Regime Continues to Arrest and Intimidate NLD Members in Burma

The military junta unjustly arrested members of the township committee of
the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Toungoo, 288 kilometres from
Rangoon. This action reveals that the Burmese military government
continues its intimidation and repression of the members of the opposition.
These latest moves began when the NLD, led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, stated
that the NLD itself would convene Parliament in September.

The chairperson of Toungoo township committee of the NLD, U Maung Maung and
3 committee members -- U Tin Maung Win, U Min Thet, and U Pe Win (election
representative of U Nyunt Way, CEC member of the NLD) -- were arrested in
the first week of September in Toungoo. The arrested people have been kept
by the authorities in the military compound of Light Battalion No. 39. The
military intelligence has threatened that they will be sent to the
frontline areas as porters.

In 1997 in Toungoo, U Saw Htoo Nwe, vice chairperson of the township
committee and other committee members were also arrested by the MIS and
sent to the frontline area. U Saw Htoo died in transit to their
destination.

In addition, U Myat Thu, the then chairperson of Toungoo
township committee of the NLD, was arrested in 1997 and died in the Toungoo
prison after being interrogated and tortured by the military regime.

In Toungoo, 30-40 supporters of the NLD have reportedly been arrested
recently.
